It’s not your typical tourist attraction, but if you ever wanted to get to grips with Omani history and culture then the Nizwa Friday Market is an early-morning experience like no other.
Nizwa is one of Oman’s oldest settlements that sits in the shadows of some of the countries largest mountains. Every Friday morning, between around 5am and 9am, Nizwa’s Friday Market is bustling with farmers who have come from all over the Al Dakhiliyah region to buy and sell animals. While the tradition is centuries old, it continues like clockwork with goats, cows and bulls being auctioned off around a circular podium. The nearby adjoining Nizwa Souq is also rife with commercial and social activity. Get a glimpse of the activity in this gallery of shots:
These photographs of Nizwa Market and Souq were taken in 2013 while on a road trip through the mountains and the country’s capital, Muscat.
